Finland qualify for #EurovolleyU17M after completing clean sweep at NEVZA qualifier

2019 CEV U17 Volleyball European Championship - Men

Kuortane, Finland, January 13, 2019. The young hosts from Finland completed a clean sweep of their matches at the NEVZA event in Kuortane to qualify for the #EuroVolleyU17M finals due to take place later this summer in Sofia. As a result, all of the Finnish national teams have secured their participation in the final stages of this year’s continental competitions, i.e. EuroVolley Men and Women plus the U16 women’s and U17 men’s tournaments.

Finland secured their qualification on Sunday at Kuortane beating Sweden in the final 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-22). Sweden fought hard, playing their best game by far in the tournament. They set the tempo of the game in each set, but Finland eventually came out on top each time. The serving game of setter Ilja Ivanov and Veikka Lindqvist’s attacks were too much to stand for Sweden.

“I am extremely happy that we achieved our goal of qualifying for the European Championship finals. It was a great final, all the honour to Sweden,” said head coach Janne Heikkinen.

The Finns celebrate their home success at the #EuroVolleyU17M qualifier in Kuortane.

In the bronze medal match, Denmark beat the Faroe Islands 3-0 (25-8, 25-16, 25-13). Best scorer was Marius Stenmann Hansen with 16 points.

Finland, however, attacked again powerfully and mostly without mistakes. Veikka Lindqvist and Urho Rytsä recorded 15 points for the Finns as Marius Stenmann Hansen registered nine for the Danes.
