Finland qualify for #EurovolleyU17M after completing clean sweep at NEVZA qualifier

2019 CEV U17 Volleyball European Championship - Men

Kuortane, Finland, January 13, 2019. The young hosts from Finland completed a clean sweep of their matches at the NEVZA event in Kuortane to qualify for the #EuroVolleyU17M finals due to take place later this summer in Sofia. As a result, all of the Finnish national teams have secured their participation in the final stages of this year’s continental competitions, i.e. EuroVolley Men and Women plus the U16 women’s and U17 men’s tournaments.

Finland secured their qualification on Sunday at Kuortane beating Sweden in the final 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-22). Sweden fought hard, playing their best game by far in the tournament. They set the tempo of the game in each set, but Finland eventually came out on top each time. The serving game of setter Ilja Ivanov and Veikka Lindqvist’s attacks were too much to stand for Sweden.

“I am extremely happy that we achieved our goal of qualifying for the European Championship finals. It was a great final, all the honour to Sweden,” said head coach Janne Heikkinen.

The Finns celebrate their home success at the #EuroVolleyU17M qualifier in Kuortane.

In the bronze medal match, Denmark beat the Faroe Islands 3-0 (25-8, 25-16, 25-13). Best scorer was Marius Stenmann Hansen with 16 points.

The finalists locked horns already on Saturday evening in the last match of the preliminary round with the Finns claiming a comfortable 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-18) victory. In the bronze medal match, Denmark will meet the Faroe Islands, who on Saturday were able to take one set from their Danish opponents to cause a little sensation.

Denmark vs. Faroe Islands 3-1 (25-12, 25-18, 22-25, 25-17)

Ten services in a row from Robert Binau Grundsøe made the difference in the first set as Denmark cruised to a landslide 25-12 win. In the second set, the Faroe Islands played their best Volleyball in the tournament this far, thus getting 18 points with the help of their captain Mattias Nolsøe Isaksen. The third set ended in a big celebration as the Faroe Islands took it 25-22. However, Denmark regrouped to claim an easy 25-17 win in the fourth to celebrate a 3-1 victory. Robert Binau Grundsøe and Mattias Nolsøe Isaksen top scored for Denmark and the Faroe Islands with 15 and 18 points, respectively.

Finland vs. Denmark 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-14)

Finland had no troubles beating Denmark, thus securing their place in Sunday’s final. The best moments for Denmark came in the second set, when they fought equally up to 15 points. Finland, however, attacked again powerfully and mostly without mistakes. Veikka Lindqvist and Urho Rytsä recorded 15 points for the Finns as Marius Stenmann Hansen registered nine for the Danes.

Mattias Nolsøe Isaksen has been the driving force of the Faroese team at the European qualifier in Kuortane and only one point shy of the top scorer in the competition.

Faroe Islands vs. Sweden 0-3 (12-25, 16-25, 17-25)

Sweden played with a completely different starting six than the one they had chosen for their first match against Denmark, but still had no problems beating the young men from the Faroe Islands, meaning the Swedes secured their spot in the final against hosts Finland with one round to spare in the prelims.

Sweden vs. Finland 0-3 (12-25, 10-25, 18-25)

Always when these two neighbours meet, there is an extra feeling of anticipation, in any sport. This time Finland left no chance to their western neighbours, registering an impressive 58% of success rate in attack. Hampus Ekstrand scored 11 times for Sweden as Jere Tikkala paced Finland with 13.
